In the Far Country

It's pretty typical for a blog's first post to be about the title. I've kind of shunned those posts before, but I suppose there's always room for change. There are two reasons for the name, the first is more obvious, but the second is not so much and I feel it deserves a proper explanation.

First of all, my family is going to a far country to live for a year. That's mainly what this blog is about, and probably why you're here. So come follow the adventure!

The other reason is inspired by one of my favorite artists, Andrew Peterson and his song The Far Country.

Father Abraham
Do you remember when
You were called to a land
And didn’t know the way

‘Cause we are wandering
In a foreign land
We are children of the
Promise of the faith

And I long to find it
Can you feel it, too?
That the sun that’s shining
Is a shadow of the truth

This is a far country, a far country
Not my home

In the dark of the night
I can feel the shadows all around me
Cold shadows in the corners of my heart

But the heart of the fight
Is not in the flesh but in the spirit
And the spirit’s got me shaking in the dark

And I long to go there
I can feel the truth
I can hear the promise
Of the angels of the moon

This is a far country, a far country
Not my home

I can see in the strip malls and the phone calls
The flaming swords of Eden
In the fast cash and the news flash
And the horn blast of war
In the sin-fraught cities of the dying and the dead
Like steel-wrought graveyards where the wicked never rest
To the high and lonely mountain in the groaning wilderness
We ache for what is lost
As we wait for the holy God
Of Father Abraham

I was made to go there
Out of this far country
To my home, to my home

Heaven is our true home, but now we are lost in a far and distant country and we long to go home. Christ is shining a light for us and we must believe and follow him. He will lead us out of this country to our home. He alone is the Way, and the Truth, and the Light.

Even though most of the posts on this blog will talk about our adventures in that far country, occasionally there will be posts about the adventures in this far country.

  1. I am looking forward to reading about your adventures from your own perspective - and about both far countries. I love the blog name!

  2. Wow, you've been prolifically writing for a long time! I am very late to the party, but glad to be here. I like the name, the explanation of it (very encouraging), the tulip banner, the font of the title, and your interesting and varied posts! I have to tear myself away now... :-)
