The Mountains
A simple summary of our trip would be sleeping, sunshine, hiking, and chocolate. I could just leave it at that, but I know most of you would want more than that! So I will add lots of pictures.
The baby goats at the stop in Heidiland.
The weapon room at the local museum. Guns, Swords, Bayonets, Oh my!
The Rhine, which also happens to be the local river!
It was really refreshing! And we had lots of fun daming up a side stream and making ourselves a pool.
One of the many interesting art pieces that the city has put up along the river trail. This is one of my favorites.
The red train that passed our balcony twice an hour, at least! (This is was not taken from our balcony, our view is much nicer. It looks up the valley.)
The front of our house. A little background – this is the house that my grandmother grew up in with her brother. It’s split up into several apartments. At one time, it all belonged to my great-great-great grandfather. Then his two sons split in half down the middle. One had two children and the other had eleven, nine of which survived to adulthood. My grandmother’s mother (Catrina) was one of those nine.
One of our numerous hikes. This one was especially winding.
Andre blowing his “daddy” dandelion seeds.
Playing in a nearby fountain. These are all over the place here.
The pretty mountains, dotted with chalets. This is looking at one of our hikes from the mountain across the valley, they’re both ski resorts. Hopefully we’ll be getting a season pass. (What looks like the valley floor in this picture is really not, it keeps going)
Mountain flowers.
This amused us greatly. Mistranslation perhaps?
The biggest collection of garden gnomes I’ve ever seen… in a garden. The people here love them, we think their silly.
Another one of our hikes took across a viaduct shared with the train. We were behind the railing, but not that far behind.
I cannot believe I got a picture of a butterfly! I thought it was dead at first, but no, then he flew away.
Andre got really tired so… I let him on my shoulders, a rare instance! He’s getting too heavy to carry anymore.
Andre and the cross that once headed the grave of his namesake (Catrina's younger brother). The cemetery is so small there that people are only there for about twenty five years and then removed to make room. It's really sad that that has to happen, what with all the open space on the mountains. Anyway, since Zarli and his brother Alois became quite famous in Switzerland, (Zarli was a comedian/singer/actor and Alois was an artist) the city put their crosses to the side so that people can still see them.
Andre and I took the train home with my grandmother (it was about six hours) across Switzerland. He fell asleep with my jacket. He loves it and when he is without his blue blanket, it serves very well. I was rather cold in the train, it was over air-conditioned.
The glaciers.
Swiss wildflowers.
That was our trip in pictures. There’s a few on another camera somewhere so they will make an appearance at some point. Now we are rested and ready for moving more furniture into our house.
Oh, and for clarification, I have changed the boys’ names on here from Simon and Andrew to Ambrose and Andre, because of their own personal preference.
And, I apologize for the superfluity of pictures of Andre, but quite frankly, he loves having pictures taken of him and normally does not make a face when the camera is pointed at him. I am going to try to sneak more pictures of the others though. :)
Have a glorious Sunday everyone!
