{St. Ursanne}

Today’s adventure was a visit to the medieval town of St. Ursanne. This used to be the only bridge that crossed the river, even when my dad was little! Now it’s only used for pedestrians, so you have to use the new one up river.

This is a statue of the patron saint of bridges. He’s not very well known apparently.

Ursanne was a monk who was called to be a missionary to those northern heathens! He lived in the twelfth century, and his monastery is still very beautiful! There were monks there until at least around 1775 and now the living buildings are used for other things. The cloister is still open to the public though. The light is beautiful in there!

To get into the town, you are obliged to use one of the many city gates. Unless of course you have the key to this little door!

We climbed up above the town to a little grotto where an abbot was supposed to have lived in hermitage. It really isn’t that far away. A monk could’ve brought him soup and by the time he got there it would still be hot, if he didn’t spill it on all those steps going up!

Here is Ambrose admiring the beautiful view…

Okay, well the view wasn’t that glamorous. :(

It’s a very pretty little town, quiet and full of antique shops.

If you come visit us, I’ll take you there.

  1. How many castles are there?

  2. In our area? I have no idea. It depends what you mean by the term castle. They vary from very well kept up to a pile of rubble. All that to say that there's lots.

    St. Ursanne doesn't actually have a castle, it's just very well fortified.

    Does that answer your question?
