rome. visiting the ancients.
We walked over streets that had felt the feet of the senators. We sat on stones that had held weary travelers. Our feet echoed in the building where the laws that formed Western civilization were passed. We looked down to the spot where countless Christians had given their lives for their love of the Truth. We passed under arches built to commemorate different moments in history, from the destruction of Jerusalem to the legalization of Christianity. Our eyes gazed out across the city from the ruins of the Palantine just as the great emperors did. History happened here, the history that made the world what is today. For me, when I'm in a place like this, it's so easy to forget exactly what happened. People laughed, people cried, people dreamed, people yelled, people smiled, people lived. They made their future. My present. And they've passed the torch.
