tide flats

We walked out into the bay, squelching across the muddy sand between the water and the rocky shore. A no man's land of sorts. Splashing out, spattering the saltwater up onto our legs. Before long we'd stand still and let our ankles be tickled, before plunging on. There we stood, out in the bay, the water up to our knees, surrounded on all sides by the distant blue humps we knew to be the islands. In every direction, the water spread out like a looking glass, reflecting the sky. Calm, save for a few ripples, never giving a hint of goes on underneath. That day it was a blue that couldn't decide to take on brown or gray as it's second choice. We splashed and hunted crabs and ran and went back to shore decidedly more wet than when we'd left it.
